Abstract
Moringa oleifera Lam. or “Kelor” in bahasa Indonesia is a tough, highly draught resistant, plant known for its nutritional values and healing capabilities that predominantly grows along the earth’s torrid climate belt and, in some cases, in the temperate zones. Almost all of Kelor plant parts can be directly consumed, although in many parts of the globe these plants are still underutilized. Common names like “the miracle tree”, “the tree of life”, or “the tree of paradise” are given to the plant because of those attributes and the striking coincidence between where the plant thrives and where relatively high malnourished population live. One prominent global market study has found that between 2018 to 2025 the Moringa ingredients market will grow 8.9% (CAGR) and reach over US$ 10 billion market value by the year 2025, where over US$ 6 billion of that will be from the leaf powder market. The North American market share will be highest, reaching values of over US$ 5 billion while the European market second with more than US$ 2 billion. To capture the opportunity of this growing demand in the American and European Moringa leaf powder market while also contributing to Indonesia’s much needed income from exports, Moringa Mukjizat Indonesia (Morizat in short) is formed, where “Mukjizat” bears the meaning “Miracle”. The company operates on 50 hectares of farm complex and processing facility in Blora, central Java, to create value from Moringa leaves into over 300 tons per annum organic, high quality leaf powder of up to 500 mesh fineness. Morizat target markets are foreign businesses that are producing consumer products with organic Moringa leaf powder as one of their ingredients. Aware of the existing competition and to have a competitive edge, Morizat highlights the experimental use of technologies still non-existent in the Moringa leaf farm industry, which are: 1) plant propagation through tissue culture biotechnology to maintain high quality plants to yield high quality leaves consistently and 2) the use of aerial photography/imaging to monitor, detect stress, and estimate yield of plants to reduce operational cost. Morizat requires an initial capital of Rp 35 billion and anticipates sales to grow from close to Rp 36 billion at the end of year 1 to over Rp 96 billion at year end 5. Gross margin is around 75% from year 3 to 5, while pro forma year 1 to 5 return estimates IRR to be attractively between 27.7% to 42.7%, with the NPV between Rp 15.2 billion to Rp 37.7 billion.
