Abstract

Indonesia has a serious waste problem. It is estimated that only less than half of its waste could be taken care of by its current waste management industry. This issue becomes more alarming since the amount and type of waste will always increase along with population growth, which is bound to happen to Indonesia, especially in Jabodetabek, which currently contributes at least 25% of Indonesia’s waste. Realizing this, the government has set a target for producers regarding waste reduction and waste management. Thus, PT Solusi Urban Lestari, through its product, Recyclus, answers the urban waste needs of property managers in Jabodetabek.

Recyclus is an integrated waste management company. It differs from other similar companies in which Recyclus provides not only waste collection service, but also recycling solutions, partnering with waste processing companies and research bodies, seeking ways to innovate the current waste management processes. The waste that is collected from residential and commercial areas, would be sorted and processed at Recyclus’ Integrated Waste Processing Site (Tempat Pengolahan Sampah Terpadu) at Tangerang Selatan before being transported to Recyclus’ waste processing partners to be reused or recycled, establishing a circular urban vision.

Over the years, Recyclus aims to continuously increase the percentage of processed waste, starting from 35% of 924 tons of waste collected monthly in the first year of operation to 60% of 2,680 tons of waste collected monthly in the fifth year of operation, thereby significantly decreasing the amount of waste ending up in landfills. This improvement could only be achieved by continuously conducting research on existing waste management processes, a collaboration between Recyclus’ research team and its research partners.

To start, Recyclus will need a capital of IDR 21,500,000,000 to fund its investment and initial operating costs. It is estimated that Recyclus would generate a turnover of IDR 10,183,013,092 in its first year of operation, even with an actual operation period of 6 months. This number would then grow every year due to additional commercial and residential areas served as well as percentage increase of processed waste. Recyclus is considered as feasible business with NPV of IDR 27,280,568,573, Internal Rate of Return of 45%, and Break-Even Point achieved in 3 years, 3.19 months.
