Abstract
FOOD SHELTER is a social venture that feeds the impoverished through bartering recyclable plastic wastes with a portion of healthy food made from excess ingredients. FOOD SHELTER aims to feed the needy with healthy food and persuade people to recycle plastic wastes. Annually, every person in Indonesia produces an average of 300 kilograms of food waste (The EIU, 2017). Ironically, 21.9% of Indonesians are still prone to famine (Global Hunger Index, 2017). On the other hand, Indonesians dispose 5.4 million tons of plastic wastes annually (Antara, 2016). FOOD SHELTER aims to solve the “unholy trinities” of hunger, plastic wastes and food wastes. Due to limited storage facilities, many fruit and vegetable sellers in central markets have to dump edible products once they can not be sold by the evening. FOOD SHELTER buys the product at lower prices and process it into meals prior to their distribution to impoverished people in exchange of recyclable plastic wastes. In addition to excess raw ingredients, FOOD SHELTER also accepts excess cooked food from hotels and restaurants. While bartering may not be the most efficient transaction, it often is the only means available for the impoverished to afford healthy food. The collected plastic wastes are sold to plastic waste collectors. This makes FOOD SHELTER almost an all-in-one solution. FOOD SHELTER provides healthy food to impoverished people in slum areas and dwellers of government subsidized flats. Our initial project in North Jakarta estimates a market size of one and a half million impoverished people. In 5 years, FOOD SHELTER is expected to provide more than 140 million meals in Greater Jakarta, rescue 28,032 tons of excess food and help distribute 10,512 tons of plastic wastes.
